Two chalk murals drawn by hand at Balsamiq HQ: a UI controls shop inspired by Bologna's alimentari, and a welcome wall for the 2019 company retreat.

Overview

Both murals started the same way: a concept, a sketch, a digital file refined on iPad. From there, I used a projector to cast the design onto the wall — not to skip the drawing, but to get the proportions and grid right at scale. Then chalk, patience, and layers.

The first mural is a little shop selling UI controls — checkboxes, buttons, alerts, browsers — displayed like products in the kind of alimentari you find in the old city centre.

The second was made for the 2019 retreat. My brief was to welcome my colleagues — the Balsamici — to Bologna, so I filled the wall with the city: San Petronio, the Due Torri, tortellini, and a lot of chalk. Three days of work, under 8 hours each.
